Rebecca Johnson

 

Flutist Rebecca Johnson is the Associate Professor of Flute at Eastern Illinois University, where she has taught since 2007. She is also the principal flute of the Heartland Festival Orchestra and 2nd flutist of the orchestra Sinfonia da Camera. Dr. Johnson enjoys national prominence as performer and teacher through her work on numerous guest artist recital series, master classes, festivals and orchestras. Internationally, she has regularly performed and taught at the Convención Internacionál de las Flautistas in Quito, Ecuador, since 2009, and was a featured artist at the 2018 Festival Internacional de Flautistas in São Paulo, Brazil. Her solo album, Songs for the Imagination, was released in 2021.

In addition to solo performances, Dr. Johnson enjoys collaboration with friends and colleagues. The spring of 2020 included recitals at the University of North Carolina – Charlotte, Ball State University, and Eastern Illinois University, and conference performances at the Music by Women International Festival and the College Music Society’s Great Lakes Regional Conference, as part of Trio Village. The second half of 2020 included a presentation on the National Flute Association’s Summer Series, and conference presentations for the National Association for College Wind and Percussion Instructors (NACWPI) National Conference, for the Rise Conference at Eastern Illinois University, and the Illinois State Music Teacher’s Association 2020 Virtual Conference. In 2021 and 2022, Dr. Johnson presented at the Music by Women International Festival, the International Double Reed Society Convention, the National Flute Association’s annual convention, and the College Music Society’s National Convention. She has enjoyed the return of orchestral playing with the Heartland Festival Orchestra and Sinfonia da Camera.

Dedicated to serving the flute community, Dr. Johnson has been involved in the National Flute Association throughout her professional career, first as the Assistant Program Chair for the 2008 convention, followed by a term as the Exhibitor Concert and Showcase Coordinator from 2008-2013. She served the organization as Secretary from 2014-2016 and recently completed her appointment as the Program Chair for the 2019 NFA convention. She is currently serving as the organization’s President.

Dr. Johnson was a Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar to the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England. She holds degrees from the University of Illinois (DMA), the University of Louisville (MM), the Royal Northern College of Music (PGDip, PPRNCM) and the University of Northern Iowa (BM).

 

Teacher

Eastern Illinois University provides an undergraduate-focused education in Charleston, Illinois. The flute studio is comprised of undergraduate music majors including BA, BM Performance and BM Teacher Licensure. Chamber Musician

Rebecca is a part of several small chamber groups, mostly comprised of current and former colleagues from Eastern Illinois University, and loosely called Musique Avec Des Amis and Trio Village. Frequently, she appears with Cara Chowning, piano, Magie Smith, clarinet, and Elizabeth Sullivan, oboe.
